Knowledge Base

Like every other field, technology has developed rapidly in the television sector. You might have purchased the latest flat panel television a year ago. However, the updated models that are introduced later make you feel that the newer ones are better than the one you already have. It has been observed that new updated versions of televisions are introduced after every few months. Nowadays, televisions offer a wide array of features such as LED backlighting, Ethernet connectivity, optional Wi-Fi, 3D, web apps and much more. There are also televisions available with flat panels that look like a PC.

Different types of Televisions

Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) are the first monitor to have a small profile. They have thinner displays that provide high picture quality. As opposed to the CRT monitors, these modern LCD TVs offer a good range of colour that can easily light up even bright rooms. The LCD TVs come in various sizes including 22, 24, 26, 32, 40, 42 inch TVs. Among these, the 32 inch and 42 inch LCD TVs are available at an expensive price but provide the best LCD television features. However, the price of LCD TV is far less than other types of TVs due to which most people in India prefer to buy them online. Sony 32 inch LCD TV is the most popular LCD TV in India.

The LCD TVs have to be backlit to produce bright colours as they don’t emit light. Sometimes an HDTV is classified as an LCD television. This signifies that it is backlit with Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL).

A LED Television is a type of LCD television with Light Emitting Diodes. Even though they provide certain advantages, they might not provide the best picture on their screens. The LED TVs come at an expensive price than the standard CCFLs. There are many screen sizes available for LED TVs that include 22, 24, 26, 32, 40, 42 and 46 inch TVs. The 32 inch and 42 inch LED TVs are the ones that are available at a more expensive price than other TVs. When you compare LCD and LED TV, you will find that LCD TVs are available at the cheapest rates. However, most people in India buy the best LED TVs online from top brands such as Panasonic and Videocon.

The LED televisions come in two styles namely, edge-lit and a full array. The edge-lit televisions have lights set around the television frame. However, the lights set in full-array are behind the screen in a grid pattern. The edge-lit models are the thinnest and lightest models that reflect light into the center of the monitor. They have fewer lights inside which is why they are available at a cheaper rate than the full-array models. However, the full-array models offer the best contrast ratios in LED technology. Most of the top brands like Samsung and Sony provide high-end LED TV models in varying sizes including 24, 32 and 40 inch. Among these various models, Samsung Bravia 40 inch LED TV and Sony Bravia 40 inch LED TV are the most popular.

When an electric current passes through positively charged gasses inside bulbs, a soup of electric current and ions is generated. This is known as Plasma that emits light (photons) at different wavelengths. The Plasma screen TVs produce the best image quality which is why they are available at a very expensive price. They have large screens and provide the best contrast ratios and colours. The plasmas are also available in a small profile, thin monitors and are ideal for LCD or LED televisions. The best feature of the plasma televisions is their pixel response. On plasma televisions, the images are rendered quickly; the image-blurring effect is diminished and clear images are produced. They have the widest viewing image with constant quality for delivering better pictures to the users. These eco-conscious televisions save electricity, so most ethical gadget buyers prefer them.

Rear projection TV

The rear projection TVs are similar to older theatre televisions. They are lit from the back with projectors due to which their contrast ratio is limited. This TV is thicker and deeper than the modern HDTVs which are mostly mounted on the wall. As compared to the other models, the modern projection televisions are thin and lightweight. As its images are projected, they are priced similar to that of smaller units with excellent image quality. Even when the RPTVs are very expensive, they can deliver an excellent HD experience as compared to the budget home theatres. In comparison to Plasma and LCD TVs that are as large as 82 inch, the same sized RPTVs are available at an exceptional price.

The latest 3D movie trend has given led t the development of HDTVs with 3D capable hardware in their monitors. The 3D television and its hardware is very complex to understand. Moreover, they are also priced at a very expensive rate.

Smart TV

Nowadays, many brands are being dubbed as Smart TVs. These television sets are the ones that are pre-loaded with Internet apps and offer integrated Wi-Fi connectivity. This feature lets users to access various social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and much more. These Tvs also allow users to access entertainment apps such as Netflix, Vudu, Hulu and Pandora. They are hard to navigate with the regular remote controller and may require specialized remote controls that are priced expensively. Smart TVs are also perfect enough to become your primary PC. However, make sure that you buy only Wi-Fi based Smart TVs and not the ones that offer Ethernet connectivity. Some of these models also come with peripheral inputs like USB or DVI input and memory card slots to store images and videos.

Factors to consider before buying a TV

Right Screen Size

When buying a television, it is necessary to choose the one that is appropriate for the size of the room. To determine this, find the best viewing position located from the TV set. The viewing distance is very important as it ensures that the user is comfortable when watching TV. When buying a television, the user must take care that it is placed at a distance from where they will not have to squint or strain to focus on the screen. Also, it is uncomfortable to look at a large sized screen. The television’s screen should be of the size that is perfect for your field of vision. In short, the users need to ensure that the television should be selected depending upon the length of the room and the user’s budget. There is a very simple way to calculate the perfect viewing distance. First, multiply the distance between the TV and the seating position (in inches) by 0.84. Now, round off the result and you get the ideal screen dimensions (diagonal size). Let’s check out the viewing distance that is required for different sized television screens.

35” class TV: 3.5 to 5 feet away

40” class TV: 4 to 6 feet away

50” class TV: 5 to 7.5 feet away

60” class TV: 6 to 9 feet away

TV input ports

Most of the latest television models provide several input ports like HDMI and USB ports. However, it is also necessary to ensure that these ports are located at a convenient place for users to plug in and plug out the cables easily.

Screen resolution

The screen resolution depicts the number of pixels that can be displayed on the television screen. A display with a greater number of pixels provides better sharpness and detail. So, it is always favourable to buy a television with high resolution display. There are many choices available in screen resolution that include 720p, 1080i and 1080p. If you are getting a small screen TV like 32 inch then opt for 1080p resolution. Nowadays, many TV channels are available in superior high-definition. As such, many people are buying a 1080p TV that gives excellent HD picture quality experience to the user.

tv-buying-guide1.jpgBack-lit technology

If you are planning to buy an LCD TV, you need to consider different backlit technologies. The LCD panels are less durable and consume more electricity than the new-fangled LED backlit LCD TVs. There are two types of back-lit technologies – edge-lit and full-array backlit variants. The backlit LCD TVs feature local dimming of the LED diodes which helps in conserving electricity and reproducing rich image quality.

3D or 2D

Nowadays, many brands are offering 3D capable TV sets. However, 3D TVs are not ideal for users who watch TV with their family. The simple reason for this is that everybody will have to wear compatible 3D glasses. These glasses are very expensive so a 3D TV needs to be purchased only if that person can afford to buy 3D glasses. Also, there is less 3D content available as compared to 2D content. The 3D technology is available in two types – polarised glasses (passive 3D) and LCD shutters (active 3D). The passive 3D technology delivers a stable and fatigue-free 3D experience. However, the active 3D technology may cause flickering leading to headaches.

Network connectivity

Most of the expensive TV models available in the market offer built-in WiFi or Wireless LAN. However, there are also models that provide the ability to attach an extra dongle to connect the TV with the home network. This feature allows users to watch web videos like YouTube on their TV wirelessly. There are many Internet-ready TVs available that have an integrated Ethernet port. Some television models also provide DLNA support that lets users to stream music, photos and videos easily from their computer or mobile phone to the TV screen. Many major brands like Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and LG bundle loads of apps which enable users to view YouTube videos, Flickr photos and other such content on the HDTV.

Gaming TV

This feature cannot be added later, so the users need to consider spending some time to determine whether they need it on their TV. There is no such concept as best TV for gaming. In reality, the regular HDTV and Blu-ray sources that provide good picture quality are considered ideal to get good picture quality for HD gaming. Let’s check out some of the features that are a must-have for gamers.

Screen: A large screen with 1080p resolution and 200 Hz LED-LCD technology is the best for gamers.

Enough Inputs: The popular gaming consoles like PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have at least one HDMI input slot. So, the users need to ensure that the television has enough number of ports to connect gaming consoles and devices like laptops and digital cameras.

Check the Game mode: Most television models are designed to deliver a good quality image that would look better with video game graphics. They provide automatic access to game mode that helps in removing any video processing, lag or delays. These lag and delays occur between the game controller and the onscreen action.

Less blurring: In order to see excellent quality at 120 Hz or higher refresh rates in LCD TVs, users need to be sensitive to motion blur. As opposed to the popular belief, the de-judder video processing modes that are used in different televisions for anti-blurring may cause lag.

Burn-in: Usually, Plasma televisions come with burn-in or temporary image retention feature. This feature allows users to pause an on-going game for approximately half-hour or more. However, some LED televisions also have this feature and allow users to pause the game for hours. In this case, it becomes unnecessary to buy a Plasma TV for gaming.

Power usage: Heavy gaming is known to consume lots of TV time that can increase the electricity bills. The power utilization increases when a heavy game is played on a big screen with brighter picture setting.

TV Sound

Televisions are not only for watching so, the users also need to consider its sound factor. Most of the television models come with built-in speakers. However, it is important for the users to choose the model that is adequate for their needs. Let’s check out the four different sound systems available in TV models.

Nicam Stereo

Nicam Stereo or Near instantaneous compounded audio multiplex provides a simple, and clear stereo sound that comes from the built-in speakers.

Virtual Dolby

The Virtual Dolby is a sound system that distributes virtual sound around the room. It uses built-in twin speakers that create the illusion of surround sound.

Dolby ProLogic

This sound system is also known as surround sound. It is similar to Nicam but doesn’t have two audio channels on the left and right. The televisions that are equipped with PreLogic decoders have the ability to receive four channels of audio. Most of the programmes are broadcast in this five-speaker system.

Dolby Digital

Its sound system is split into five channels – three at the front and two at the rear end. This ensures that the sound surrounds the user completely. This sound system also includes a subwoofer to fill the room with base. The users can easily recreate the cinematic experience in their living room with a separate home theatre system. This sound system comes with a powerful subwoofer that is positioned behind the TV set. Similarly, the satellite speakers are positioned around the room. This enables users to get rich and detailed sound effect.

Some people might feel that these sound systems are not robust enough to spend lots of money. In such a case, the users can also look at options like sound bar speaker. They give better sound quality as compared to the built-in TV speakers.

Choose between the stand, HDMI cables or surge protector

HDMI cables

An HDMI cable is used for connecting a Blu-ray player or gaming console with a television set. This will allow users to watch movies on the Blu-ray player or to play games easily on the gaming console. It also enables users to watch TV using high-definition DVR that needs to be connected to the TV.

Get a Surge Protector

A surge protector is very important to shield a television. In order to shield the television, the user needs to choose a protector with coaxial inputs and outputs for its cable or antenna.

Choose the Stand

Apart from the various new purchases for the TV, it is essential to make an additional purchase of the stand. The stand proves useful in supporting the TV set. The ideal choice would be to buy a good TV Mount or Stand when purchasing a television.

Screen finish

Most of the TV screens are available in matte or glossy finish. A screen that cuts down on reflections is a good choice for those who watch television in a bright room. However, most of the high-end LCD and LED TVs come with glossy screens. As such, there are limited option in televisions available for users who watch TV in a bright room.

Many of the major television brands such as LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba offer high-end LCD, LED as well as Plasma TVs at a reasonable price. Since there are so many kinds of televisions available, the users need to make careful decision when buying it. We have covered here all the different aspects and the types of televisions available today. This will surely benefit you to buy the appropriate television for your living room.

With Apple all set to launch its latest innovations soon at the WWDC, Google is also preparing to unveil Android TV at its Google I/O conference in this month. Google will launch this platform around June 25 to June 26 this year.

Android TV is going to be a new platform for the manufacturers of TVs and set-top boxes. This platform will allow them to bring streaming services to the television and make Google’s entry into your living room. As opposed to Google TV that was launched in 2010, Android TV integrates online media services as well as Android-based games.

Google is believed to be in discussion with Netflix and Hulu Plus about playing a role in Android TV. The company may also launch a few hardware partners for Android TV. Android TV may also launch its secret weapon, dubbed as Pano. Android TV is presumed to build a simple user interface whose key element is internally named as Pano.

Pano will display apps as individual pieces of content in a card-like fashion on the home screen. This will allow users to browse their favorite movies and TV shows on Android TV. Google will use the card-style UI that can be browsed horizontally on this platform as opposed to the traditional smart TV experience. The content will be presented in a series of cards. Apart from that, each movie or TV show episode will have deep links in the publisher’s app. With this, the users will be able to get the option to start playing at once.

Its important to note that Android TV is a software platform and not a hardware platform. So, we can soon expect that Google will launch Android TV platform at the I/O and provide vendors the freedom to develop it further.

If you want to upgrade your TV or thinking of buying a new one, you are probably thinking—LED or LCD, which one is better? This question confuses most of us, so we give you the run down on the subject of LED vs. LCD to make your decision making process simpler.

First of all, it is important to understand that LED TVs are LCD TVs. That’s right—all LED TVs are actually LCD TVs. LED refers to how certain LCDs are backlit. When we look at old LCDs, they were backlit by fluorescent bulbs, resulting in uneven lighting. Then came LEDs, which are nothing but a new type of LCDs. In simplest terms, LED TVs are LCDs backlit by LEDs. So while LCD TVs use CCFL’s or cathode fluorescent lamps for backlighting, LED TVs make use of smaller LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes for backlighting. So it’s really just the way the screens are illuminated that makes all the difference. Otherwise, in essence, both LCD and LED TVs work on the liquid crystal display (LCD) technology.

Because of a different backlighting technology, LED TVs have several advantages over ordinary LCD TVs. Firstly, since LEDs are much smaller than CCFLs, LED TVs are much thinner than LCD TVs. You will find that most TV sets that are slimmer than an inch are making use of LED s, and this results in little depth to the display profile.

Another benefit is that LED TVs are much more power efficient than LCD TVs that work on CCFLs. This means that LED TVs relatively consume much less power.

Also, LED TVs give you deeper blacks, along with a far better overall picture quality, thanks to their selective lighting technique. On the other hand, their CCFL counterparts light the whole screen in an even manner, so there is no variation in the intensity of backlighting on the screen. This is where LED TVs take the crown with local dimming. Contrary to LCDs that are designed to give full brightness all the time, LEDs give the freedom to control the output, so the intensity of light can be dimmed or even turned off selectively.

Here is a simple example to explain the effect of local dimming in a better way. Imagine a space scene with a big expanse of black, with tiny bright dots scattered on the space like stars, and a bigger bright object right in the middle, like a sizeable planet. This image can only be fairly reproduced on an LED. Since LCD panels are unable to block out light coming from backlights, they cannot pull off such an image, whereas LEDs can, due to local dimming. An LED TV is capable of intelligently dimming or entirely turning off the lights that are not needed, and then using the exact ones that are required to make the planet and stars stand out brightly.

After knowing these basic facts about LED and LCD TVs, you will realize that the topic of discussion here is quiteundebatable. It is clear that LEDs are better than LCDs. LEDs do not just produce a better picture, but are also easy to mount, thin and extremely energy efficient.

What exactly is Apple tv?
Apple TV is a smart digital media receiver from the house of Apple Inc. This is a small form factor network appliance that has been designed to play digital content straight from the iTunes store, Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Flickr, and iCloud. It also plays content from any Mac OS machine or windows PCs running iTunes.

In essence, Apple TV lets you use an HDTV set to view content from a local network or the Internet. The functioning of Apple TV is similar to that of an iPod. It pairs and syncs with the iTunes library and allows playback and transfer of media. It also works as a media receiver by streaming media over a network Apple TV can stream media from up to five computers or iTunes libraries.

How does it compare to the 1st generation Apple TV?
Just like the iPod, there have been variations of the Apple TV, each differing from the other. Here is how the latest Apple TV differs from its predecessors.

1. Interface
The Apple TV interface has always been intuitive and simple. The only change for the latest Apple TV UI consists of mostly the ‘for purchase’ stuff than your own collection.  At the top of the UI are movies, TV, and music, which direct you to the iTunes store. The second generation Apple TV collates your personal content into one location under ‘computers’. This is where all of your movies, music, and pictures would be saved. The first generation Apple TV featured this together at the top level. The latest variation requires you to do a couple of clicks to get to your data.

2 .Performance
The first generation AppleTV synched your iTunes library, much like the iPod, and the library menu was synched and ready whenever you accessed it. This is not the case with the 2ndgeneration Apple TV. Whenever a menu is accessed, the interface loads the library, offering a lot of lag. This is more so in cases where the music and video library is extensive. In a nutshell, it has quite a few lags and glitches.

AirPlay was a very slick feature that was seen in the Apple TV. As you play a video or song on iTunes App, it plays on 2nd Gen AppleTV. But as of now, this works only with Apple’s apps such as video, YouTube, Photos and iTunes, not with anything else.  The lack of support for third party apps renders the Airplay feature partially pointless.

4.Picture Quality
All other factors noted, there is one mark difference in the latest edition of Apple TV and its predecessors. Where past editions could only go upto 720p, the latest model can stream 1080p videos from iTunes and Netflix. The quality is crisp and immersive, and the details are amply seen. The Apple TV is also pretty equipped in the sound department. It can deliver Dolby digital 5.1 channel sound along with regular stereo sound as well.

Photo Stream is a great social media feature on Apple TV. This feature was first introduced with iOS 6 and iCloud. This feature allows you synchronizes your photos on all your devices, and share them with your friends. Much like the functioning of Instagram, every time you upload a picture, your friends will be notified, letting them view your picture on the app.

So should you actually buy it?
Those who are Apple loyalists, and are satisfied with their older Apple TV might opt for the latest edition. Although the interface is slightly buggy, and library access is slower than before, the idea of synching to your libraries remotely may still be a big plus to some. That said, if internet media is your game, go for it. Remember that you’ll need a good broadband connection for optimum usage.

Sony’s motion processing features prevent any blurriness and jaggedness. This TV features two 10-watt speakers and a 10-watt subwoofer. This gives a top notch sound quality. With all the features, this TV is bound to be very power hungry but the 55HX850 is astonishingly power efficient.

With New Year just around the corner, a lot of you must be looking to acquire a new television set. However, given the range and technology available in the market today, it can be a really confusing task. Besides the fine specifications, there is the issue of which kind best suits our needs, whether it is LED or LCD or plasma. To avoid the confusion, you must first know about all the technologies in brief. Here’s an overview of each.

 CRT technology

This is what your first television used to employ. Essentially, this technology uses a picture tube that produces an electronic beam which scans phosphors line by line on the screen of the tube. This in turn produces the image. However, this is now a passé technology primarily because of the bulk and weight of the picture tube and availability of better technology at affordable rates.

Plasma technology

Plasma technology, again works on a similar principle, namely, the phosphor lines have to be scanned. But in place of an electronic beam, it uses a superheated charged gas, sort of a fluorescent light. The long and short of it is that it doesn’t need a picture tube and the resultant television set takes the thin cabinet profile, making it a perfect choice if you’re looking to save space.

LCD technology

A thin cabinet profile can also be achieved by an alternate mechanism. In LCD technology, again, images are not scanned by an electronic beam. The picture elements called ‘pixels’ are either turned off or refreshed at a particular rate. The most commonly used refreshed rate is 60 and 120 which simply means that the image will be refreshed every 60th or 120th second. Also, LCD pixels do not have light of their own. In order to produce a visible image, pixels have to be backlit. The resultant process is a rapid turning off and on of the pixels depending on the requirements of the image. There are some sophisticated ways in which this process is executed, and all those technologies are available in the market.

OLED technology

This is the newest technology available to consumers and has been used in virtually all the electronic appliances, including tablets, cellphones and other small screen gadgets. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode and borrows features and characteristics from both LCD and plasma television. OLED is capable of producing the best images in TV technology so far. Also, the panels can be made so thin as to be flexible at times. This idea culminated in the manufacturing of curved TV screens.

There are plenty of thoughts that go through one’s mind while purchasing LED TVs that are available online. The one thing that people keep in mind is the video resolution and clarity of the image. There is always hesitation when it comes to choosing between 720p and 1080p TVs. So, how different or similar are they to each other? The major common factor is that both are high definition video display formats; moreover, they have progressive display formats.

The 720p consists of 1280 pixels that are displayed horizontally across the screen and 720 pixels vertically. The 1080p, on the other hand, offers a progressive display of 1920 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels verticallywith a high definition resolution. The main difference between the two is that 720p makes up for almost 1m pixels, which is equivalent to 1 megapixel in a digital camera, while the 1080p offers 2m pixels. This proves that the 1080p captures more details as compared to a 720p image.

These days most of the LCD, Plasma, or DLP TVs are available in a resolution of 1080p. However, there are still certain models of LED TVs below a 40 inches screen, which have a lower price when available in a 720p resolution. This narrows down the price margin between the 720p and 1080p LED, LCD TV models. The manufacturers are finding it very cost effective to raise the number of 1080p TVs in smaller sizes. Most LED TV and LCD TV models that are sold online are tagged as 720p TVs. Technically speaking, these TVs have a resolution of 1366×768 (768p). The TV will still scale any resolution to its native 1366×768 pixel display resolution.

Cable/satellite broadcasters vary the resolutions depending on the channel. So, in case if it is a regular news/sports channel like Fox, ESPN, etc. it will make use of 720p resolution. But with respect to premium channels like HBO, TNT, etc. it will consider using a 1080p resolution. People who own the recent 720p LED or LCD TV model will be able to access the 1080p content sent by certain satellite channels. However, the TV scales the content as per its native resolution display. Even Blu-ray players automatically detect the native pixel resolution of the TV and deliver the output accordingly. These Blu-ray disc players allow easy and manual setting of the output resolution display as per the individual’s choice.

It all finally depends on the clarity of the image in your respective LED and LCD TV. Besides the resolution, there are several other factors that need to be considered while looking for high-definition viewing. Some of them are motion response, brightness, contrast, colour processing, video scaling, etc. The quality of the source signal does play a vital role, but at the end of the day, the TV’s video processor can only compensate for the low-quality signals. It all settles down to three main factors: the resolution, size of the TV, and the distance between the TV and your seating position. If the distance between the TV and an individual is less, then 720p should suffice. But in case if it’s a bigger TV (over 50 inches) and the distance too is quite more, then 1080p can be considered. The choice between the two resolution formats should be made according to all the factors mentioned above and most importantly on your preferences.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is here and it seems like a brilliant time to make an investment in an HDTV to experience the trials and tribulations, the thrills, and the spills all in crystal clear high definition. The best HDTV’s enhance your viewing experience, bringing a burst of colour and sound into your home. What makes HDTV better than the standard television that you had in your childhood? Is it really time to move away from your comfort zone for a minute and into the firing line where different options zip by at a thousand miles a second? There’s the plasma TV at your neighbours home, adorning a wall, but useless during the day, the LCD at your friend’s home that you huddle around when watching your favorite new television series, but which one is the right one for you?

Plasma TVs have their benefits over other types and are considered the best HD tvs by some. They use tiny encased gas cells to create stunning images. They are better than LED and LCD TV’s in some ways. Each tiny gas cell has the ability to turn on and off, much faster than the other types of television, rendering fast motion at a much better rate than other types. Deeper blacks and more subtle grays are possible in plasma TVsallowing for incredible cinematic experiences. The colour quality is better in Plasma TVs when compared to that in LCD television sets. In terms of pricing, plasma TVs are usually much lower than LCD of the same size. However, Plasma televisions aren’t as effective as the LCD TV’s in bright light though, LCD’s win in terms of brightness. Plasma TVs also tend to be a little heavier than LCD’s and larger in terms of dimensions.

LCD and LED televisions tend to be much brighter than Plasma televisions and provide an incredible HD viewing experience. The colours tend to feel richer and brighter than they would have been naturally. One would assume that these are the best HDTV’s, but the truth is that though there is an incredible array in terms of offerings, brands and functionality, even these marvels are becoming redundant. The reason for them becoming redundant is the influx of new age 4KTV’s. HDTV’s work at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and provide incredible visuals, the LED and LCD versions along with Plasma sets are now having to compete with 4KTV’s, that function at a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The increased number of pixels contributes directly to an even better visual experience. At this resolution, life-like visuals are a reality. You can buy HDTV’s online now as well, reducing the time spent commuting to a store and having to go through a variety of demos. All the features are also easily accessible online, and price and model comparisons can be made, with most websites offering a side by side view.
