The clash of the Playstation and Xbox consoles started towards the end of 2013 with both Xbox and PlayStation—the two major camps in the gaming industry—surprisingly releasing their latest versions only a week apart. So what do the Xbox One and PS4 have to offer? And how do they take high definition gaming to the next level? Here’s a look at the pros and cons of both these playstation gaming consoles.

The PlayStation 4 isn’t as bulky as its predecessor and comes with a significantly improved controller. However, a lot of playstation games were delayed, making for a lukewarm launch. The upside is that a great deal of popular multi-platform games like Lego Marvel Superheroes and Assassin’s Creed look better on PS4 and some games are more high definition on the PS4 than the Xbox One. Also, Xbox prices tend to be a little on the higher side, but if variety in games is what you’re looking for, then make your pick accordingly!
Xbox One’s home screen navigation could also use some improvement. While their attempt to simplify user experience is admirable, their approach has led to a cluttered mess. You can pin your favourite apps, but things can be difficult to organize otherwise. Hopefully, a software update is on the cards to bring better organization. PS4’s home menu also leaves a lot of room for improvement as, at the time of launch, it lacks an option to customize the menu.

shutterstock_145090108-300x198.jpg

On the bright side, the Xbox One has a more accurate camera sensor than its earlier models and the working of voice commands comes as a much needed improvement. Xbox One is much more than just a single feature; it is a media suite, and a very good one at that. It has an HDMI port so you can control and record TV, on-demand services including the likes of Netflix, iPlayer and LoveFilm, and a Blu-ray playback feature. Want to Skype during a game session? It is possible with the Xbox One’s Snap function that lets you run a second app alongside games.

But there’s one thing that will make any Xbox One user jealous of PlayStation 4 owners. The PS4 has a Remote Play option that allows you to play PlayStation 4 games on your PlayStation Vita handheld device. Of course there are minor issues such as lag in streaming, especially if you’re connecting at a considerable distance, but imagine using your PS Vita as a second controller for games like Lego Marvel Super Heroes! The Remote Play option earns extra brownie points for the PS4.

All in all, the Xbox consoles have a strong line-up of games but it has clearly been positioned as more of amultimedia device than a dedicated gaming console. It might be the ideal choice for families that need a multi-purpose device that is apt for gaming, watching videos, listening to music etc. But young hardcore gaming enthusiasts might not be so impressed with what the new Xbox One has to offer. As for the PS4, Sony has made every effort to develop a gaming console with minimalist design—both physically and internally. With the promise of simpler development and impressive launch titles, the PS4 looks like a device wholly focused on gaming. With both devices having their pros and cons, we leave it up to you see what best suits your needs.

If you happen to know hardcore gamers, dor share this blog with them. Also, post comments in case you have any queries.

Microsoft is ready to launch the Xbox One as the ultimate all-in-one entertainment system. The Xbox One features the second generation of Kinect, Microsoft’s revolutionary motion sensing input device – tucked away deep inside the console’s mainframe. Microsoft has also deliberately endeavoured to match Sony PS4’s powerful specifications. The latest version of the Xbox aims to become the one-stop entertainment solution, by integrating live TV, games, movies and web services like Skype, all controlled using Kinect’s improved voice recognition features. Looks like the company is ready to enter a new era of console gaming and take on a new generation of multimedia consumers.

Specifications: The Microsoft Xbox One is equipped with the latest x64 8-core AMD Jaguar processor, USB 3.0 ports, a 500 GB hard-drive and an 8GB DDR3 RAM. It also features an 802.11n Wi-Fi connection with a Wi-Fi Direct function, to efficiently exchange content between different devices, especially for the new Xbox controller. Microsoft has also for the first time infused an extra Blue-ray drive as a direct move to compete with Sony’s technology. It is well known that Sony had done away with the HD DVD drive a long time ago. Besides, this console comes with an HDMI output port along with an HDMI input port. This feature helps to connect the Xbox with a set-top box, in order to integrate it with your TV-viewing experience. Microsoft has left no stone unturned in designing the Xbox One like a miniature PC. Unlike its earlier versions, the specifications of the Xbox One puts it on par with Sony’s PS4 and augurs well for game creators interested in developing cross-platform games.

The controller and Kinect
The new Xbox One has Microsoft’s groundbreaking Kinect 2 functionality built into its very core. To turn the console on, one has to just utter the words “Xbox One, and voila, the console zooms into life, since it’s always listening. Kinect 2 is able to instantaneously respond to hand gestures and voice commands, which wasn’t possible with the Xbox 360’s original Kinect function. Moreover, with the help of this function, the user can switch between games, videos, music and live TV within seconds using simple voice commands such as “Xbox watch TV”. It’s even possible to switch between TV channels using similar voice commands. In fact, Microsoft states that Kinect 2 is so fast and powerful that it detects motion in just 13 billionths of a second – the same time it takes light to travel from a person to the camera. The Kinect sensor delivers a sharp resolution of 1080p and captures video at a high speed of 60 fps , which provides clearer and crispier images on an HD TV. Besides, Kinect 2 has a camera with a field of view 60 times larger than the original Kinect, which means greater mobility while playing the games. Along with this, it also boasts of an advanced processor, which enables a large number of people to play the game simultaneously. To boot, Microsoft claims that the new Kinect utilises infrared, permitting it to operate smoothly even in total darkness.

The Bad Part
No used Games: Previously played discs will only function on another player’s user account if a fee of some sort is paid. No details as yet have been disclosed on what this fee might be or whether it will be charged to used game retailers or the people buying used games. It is also rumoured that the original installed copy – all Xbox One games must be installed and played off hard disk, might not function after the disc has been associated with a new account. This will make lending completely impossible. This would potentially restrict all gamers from trading or buying used games or even playing used games on the console, which in turn would mean the death of multiplayer gaming, as we know it. However, Microsoft has good reason to want to restrict gamers’ ability to buy and sell used software, since game publishers make no money off titles traded between retailers and players. Nevertheless, the question needs to be answered if Microsoft has considered that many of those who trade in games use the money from those dealings to procure new games. Without this money, many gamers with lower earnings could end up purchasing fewer games. This in turn, could severely affect new software sales. One imagines if Microsoft is digging its own grave here with this new policy.

Xbox-One-Cost-India.jpg

No Backward Compatibility: Another troubling matter for current Xbox 360 users is that none of their existing hardware software, controllers or peripherals is transferable to the company’s upcoming system. Neither the predated Xbox 360 retail games nor the downloaded XBLA titles can be merged with the Xbox One. The only reprieve that Microsoft is offering gamers is its word-of-mouth that it intends to continue supporting Xbox 360 hardware for a long time. However, this does not alleviate the annoyance of being unable to simply get rid of one machine and replace it with another, or being compelled to shell out about 50$ a pop on new Xbox One controllers when the existing collection of Xbox 360 game pads have the same assortment of buttons and knobs and still function sans any obstacles. It seems extremely likely at this point in time that the new Xbox One seems destined to distance some of Microsoft’s major gaming patrons.

When is it expected
Unfortunately, Microsoft has made no mention of a release date for the Xbox One. More details should stream in July this year. At this point, all indications point towards a launch by the end of 2013, perhaps just before Christmas. This might be a smart ploy on the company’s part to boost sales during the holiday season. If this is actually the case, then the release date for the Xbox One in India will be pushed even further to next year. This is sure to disappoint many avid gamers who would’ve being eagerly awaiting the launch of the Xbox One in India.

It will fully support selling and renting out disc-based games which was a rather exciting announcement made. Users however will have to take paid membership to play PS4 online.

The latest PS3 slims down to its smallest size ever while retaining everything we like–and a few things we don’t–about the PlayStation 3 gaming console. One could expect this gadget to replace the older model with a younger, sexier one. Disappointingly, the new PS3 Super Slim is anything but that.

The newly redesigned PlayStation 3 is smaller and lighter than ever before; it’s the same old PS3 but in a brand new case. In simple terms, it looks less like a video game console and more like an outdoor grill. We just don’t see any reason why one would choose the Super Slim over other PS3 models for portability alone, especially since a console cannot be carried around like a laptop.

PS38001374977_a2826448ed_k-300x226.jpgDesign
At first look, the Super Slim PS3 is unexpectedly small. The aesthetic design, look and the shape resembles something of a hybrid between the PS3 Slim and the original PlayStation 3 that was released back in 2006. That said, it’s much smaller, measuring 290mm wide, 60mm tall and 230mm deep. It is 20 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than its immediate predecessor, the PS3 Slim. With this innovation, Sony has also added on a non-motorized sliding disc cover instead of a slot-loading disc tray. It is totally analog, meaning you can open it manually by sliding the plastic cover right to left, or by hitting the eject button that rests on the front. The Super Slim has a much cheaper feel compared to previous models, and whether it was to cut costs or save space, the disc loading tray at the top is an ultimate step back.

Features
When you open the box, you’ll find the console, a matte black DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller with AV and USB cables and the same AC adapter as the PS3 Slim. Unfortunately, you’ll have to hunt out (or more likely buy) another HDMI cable. Like the majority of the PS3 iteration before it, this Super Slim PS3 is not backward-compatible with PS2 games. For that type of functionality, you’ll need to search through the PlayStation Store to see if the PS2 game you want to revisit is available, and then of course you’ll need to buy it. Apart from the 500GB storage, it is the same in terms of internal components with the same Cell Broadband Engine CPU and RSZ GPU. You can definitely expect Blu-ray compatibility with 3D gaming support, and the usual access to movies, TV shows, music and much more via PlayStation Network and Sony Unlimited.

Performance
There isn’t any visible speed increase with the new PS3. Since the disc tray is no longer embedded in the console, the laser reader can be heard from time to time. The console doesn’t make much noise beyond the laser reading movements. But there doesn’t seem to be the excess fan noise that the original PS3 suffered from. One thing we did notice during Blu-ray playback mode was that the virtual controls now look bolder, making them easier to view from a distance. This is a small but welcome change, having had to squint from afar with the previous models.

Downgrades
In an attempt to create something staggering, Sony has dropped significant features such as Linux support as well as backward compatibility with PS2 games. The slot loading Blu-dray drive has been replaced by a top-loading eyesore. The door that is hidden behind a spring-loaded sliding mechanism, opens with a mechanical eject button and has to be closed manually. Unlike its sturdily built predecessor, the Super Slim’s bodywork feels fragile. Also, the classy matte black body of the Slim has been replaced with shiny plastic that turns into a smudgy, fingerprint- riddled mess in a matter of minutes. Sony has actually opted for a cheaper alternative, and the difference is as profound as going from the USS Enterprise’s tractor beam to the Maruti Omni’s sliding door.

The Verdict- Does it really compare to the older gen PS3?
Basically, the PlayStation 3 Super Slim remains a cosmetic redesign of what’s essentially a seven-year-old hardware. If the lack of novelty or any kind of hardware optimization wasn’t bad enough, the very apparent instances of cost cutting make it worse.

And if you already own a PS3 Slim, there’s no real reason to want to swap consoles. If Sony had added simple things like an IR sensor and HD cables out of the box, we’d have a much easier time recommending it as a worthy upgrade for current PS3 owners.

xbox-one-vs-ps4-vs-wii-u (1).jpg

This year the biggies of gaming consoles are launching the successors to their already established consoles. Microsoft had released the Xbox 360 gaming console in the year 2005. After so many years, it is going to launch its successor that will be called Xbox One which is slated to go on sale by the end of 2013. Sony is also giving touch competition with the launch of the next model of gaming console that is PlayStation 4 which was unveiled this February. The earlier model PlayStation 3 was launched seven years before in 2006. Nintendo had also launched its eighth generation console Wii U in late 2012. Even though its predecessor Wii was launched in 2006, it was revolutionized to be controlled with sensors that gave the users the freedom to play using their whole body in 2008. All these three gaming consoles have grown to become multimedia platforms and services rather than just gaming devices. These days many cloud and streaming technologies and services are being used in the gaming consoles which has changed the face of the digital interaction significantly. Let us dive into the features of each of these.

Xbox-One-300x224.jpg

Power
When it comes to processors, the Wii U from Nintendo is still using the PowerPC technology though Sony and Microsoft have used different processors for their latest gaming console models. Both the companies are now using processors that are based on AMD x86 and GPU which are far more powerful than the Wii U. The Xbox One runs an 8-core CPU at 1.84 trillion operations per second. Apart from the PlayStation 4 running 8-core CPUs, it has excellent graphics processor which is better than the Xbox One and has 1.2 teraflops. As opposed to the 2GB RAM provided by Wii U, the Xbox One and PS4 have 8GB RAM. Unlike PS4, the information about the Xbox One DDR3 or GDDR5 has not yet been revealed. Apart from that, the graphic capabilities of the new Xbox One are unknown though rumours claim that it is less than the PS4.

The 500GB internal hard drive provided by Xbox One is non-removable while Sony has not yet announced the type of storage it will have for PS4. Comparatively, Wii U provides 8GB to 32GB option for storage. The Xbox One uses a 64-bit version of Windows NT 6.x kernel which focuses on DirectX 11 API. As opposed to this, the PlayStation 4 runs on the UNIX system and has support for OpenGL 4.2 API. Earlier, consoles used to focus solely on the game but now the modern console gives as much importance to set-top boxes, controllers, user interface controls and gaming accessories.

Graphics
The whole hardware structure of the Wii U has the ability to surpass the visual concepts that are used by Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Yet, this proves to be a drawback for Wii U when it is compared to the other new generation of gaming consoles. The PlayStation meeting showed the amazing graphics of PlayStation 4 that provides the new technology. The new engine developed for this technology, Quantic Dream showcased the amazing degree of realism of a face entirely. The users will be able to check the minute details of the game through the high-quality graphics offered by this console.

Nitendo-Wii-U1-300x187.jpg

Multimedia center
For the first time ever, Microsoft has provided a built-in Bluray drive in its console which is similar to the one offered by PlayStation 4. As opposed to the earlier console models, the latest models not only serve as a device to play games but also act as a central multimedia center for the player. Both, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have the capability to play HD videos and photos while Nintendo Wii U can be used as a media player. The Xbox One features facial recognition and voice commands and also has the ability to change the function quickly. The PlayStation Eye enables users to capture HD video, record as well as store the most exciting moments of the games. The Kinect which is Xbox’s physical control is equal to five PlayStation Eye of the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation Eye also features face recognition for the PlayStation 4. The Game Pad is the latest multi-trend used by Wii U which enables users to use the game’s actions similar to the gadget tablet type and also lets players use gaming accessories.

The game for players
The PlayStation 4 ensures that its focus stays on the hardcore gamer, using social tools for gaming as well as through Gaikai which is a cloud gaming platform. The new generation of consoles are expected to provide games like Deep Down, The Witness, Knack, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Club Drive, Destiny, Infamous: Second Son, Shadow fall Killzone and the awaited version of Watch Dogs.

Sony-PS4-300x176.jpg

Most people are unhappy with the games available onWii U due to which it is not getting as much popularity as the other consoles. The main console releases are for multiplatform titles or even Mario franchise along with the exclusive ZombiU. It is hoped that the sales of the Nintendo’s new console increase due to the arrival of a new Zelda which is expected to release by 2014.

Microsoft has started providing exclusive games for its new generation console, Xbox One. It is going to offer over 15 exclusive games and eight new franchises in the first year of Xbox One. Some of the games that it is going to provide include Call of Duty: Ghosts, Forza Motorsport Quantum Break, NBA Live 14, Madden NFL 25, UFC and FIFA 14.

Conclusion
There isn’t a lot of difference between the three gaming consoles though the differences can be found out only through a practical test. The new consoles of Microsoft and Sony will pose as a great competition for high-end gamers while the Nintendo’s new console is sure to appeal casual gamers. It is expected that these consoles will provide such high performance that it would leave the PC behind.

As far as the Blu-ray player is concerned, the PlayStation 3 is the best one currently available. The one obvious difference between a Playstation 3 and any Blu-ray player is that Playstation 3 well lets users play games. The gaming doesn’t stay till casual games as the biggest real games can be played on PS3. Some of these games can be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, Grand Theft Auto: IV, and so on.

One can think about the way Blu-ray would work if it was adopted by Microsoft or Nintendo. In the 1980s, the Betamax and VHS had battled for home entertainment while now Blu-ray is competing with the HD DVD. The Blu-ray was backed up by Sony while Microsoft opted for HD DVD but HD DVD fizzled out. This led Microsoft to focus solely on its Xbox 360 while Nintendo is yet to support Blu-ray player on its Wii console.

The Playstation’s web enabled technology has expanded and allows users to get downloadable software updates. This means that Blu-ray has been continuously upgrading its software which is getting incorporated in the Playstation 3. Initially, only the BD Live feature was being added as the Blu-ray services but now it also provides interactive features such as text chat and live commentary. All these features will help Playstation 3 to become all the more better and provide a powerful built-in processor, massive hard drive and peripheral support.

The digital distribution is being considered the future of home entertainment while the Blu-ray will fizzle out. There is no basis to these statements yet they seem to be true as Playstation 3 is preparing for its digital revolution. Sony has built the distribution service in the Playstation Network through which the digital revolution will take place. This technology will enable users to download full high-definition movies and television shows by using streaming media services like the Netflix’s instant movie streaming software. The upcoming Sony PlayStation 4 has gathered a lot of attention and is expected to better the legacy even further.

The first time Playstation 3 was introduced, it came with an extremely hefty price which included the Blu-ray DVD player. Currently, Playstation 3 is priced at Rs. 22,990/- and is hard to resist for gamers as well as non-gamers since in the same pack you get not only an unbeatable gaming experience but also the best Blu-ray movie Experience.

This has caused disappointment to many Indian gaming fanatics.

There is no confirmation yet about when Sony will launch its PlayStation 4 in India. However, the listings by an online vendor stated that this state-of-the-art next generation gaming technology will hit Indian markets by January 2014. We are not yet sure if this is true or if it’s just one of the many rumors spreading online about the PlayStation 4.

The delay in the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 4 in India has given rise to various speculations. Some of these reasons include ps4-india.jpgconcerns over inventory and deployment logistics as well as the fluctuating Rupee exchange rates.

The price of PlayStation 4 in India has been estimated to be around Rs 25,000 when it will launch in the first quarter of 2014.

There have been a few changes on the controller side as well. The DualShock 4 controller of the new PlayStation 4 can stay connected wirelessly to the main system through Bluetooth 2.1. It features an integrated camera which works seamlessly with the console’s touchpad and light bar to steer the controller’s 3D position.

The delay in the launch of Sony’s PlayStation 4 has resulted in many gaming fanatics falling prey to fake second hand PlayStation 4. They are also willing to pay any price for this console, but fail to realize that it is only a sham.

It is being predicted that in addition to the release of Sony’s PlayStation 4, the unveiling of Microsoft’s Xbox One would also take place around the same time. The competition between the gaming consoles of Microsoft and Sony may result in a possible plunge in their prices.

There is much anticipation for the release of Sony’s PlayStation 4, but it looks like Indian gamers will have to wait till the next January to get their hands on this next generation gaming console. Till then, we hope that the tough competition between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One results in a dip in their prices and proves beneficial for the gamers in India.
