What’s next from OnePlus?

One Plus is gearing up to launch its second flagship phone of the year, presumably called the OnePlus 6T, which is shaping up to be more than the incremental update everyone was anticipating.

The company has seen a massive buzz surrounding the launch of the 6T, fuelled by constant leaks which have shed light on key specifications, design tweaks and even a new fingerprint sensor system.

OnePlus is known for packing its phones with flagship specs, and the 6T shouldn’t be any different.

The new flagship is expected to come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chip or the new Snapdragon 855 chip, 6GB/8GB RAM (just like on the current OnePlus 6) and storage configurations of at least 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. It is expected to run the Android v9.0 (Pie) software.

On the photography front, there are a couple of conflicting leaks in play. The first, features a rumoured triple rear camera setup consisting of 16MP + 20MP + 8MP sensors. On the other hand, cost considerations may lead to a more basic dual camera 16MP + 20MP setup. On the front, it could feature a 25MP Selfie Camera (yay!). The battery is expected to be bigger than the OnePlus 6, around 3840mAh, enough to blaze you through two days of uninterrupted usage.

In Display Fingerprint Scanner

With the OnePlus 5T, the company moved the fingerprint sensor to the back to make way for a larger screen with slimmer bezels, and now, it might embed the sensor within the screen itself.

Several Chinese phone manufacturers like Oppo and Vivo are putting the fingerprint sensor right into the screen, but as with various innovative features for these phones, it works a little slow. Even if the fingerprint sensor is a tad slower than the one on the OnePlus 6, the 6T will still likely have the speedy face-unlock feature. Though relatively less secure, it’ll do the job.

In an email to CNET, OnePlus states that, "We unlock our phones multiple times a day, and Screen Unlock reduces the number of steps to complete the action. By adding this feature as an addition to other display unlocking options such as Face-Unlock, users will have options to unlock the display in a way that is most efficient for them."

Design Tweaks

2new.jpgThe OnePlus 6T is rumoured to come with a larger 6.4-inch OLED display (the OnePlus 6 had a 6.28-inch screen). Its screen resolution is expected to be 2,340 x 1,080 — OnePlus has firmly stuck with a 1080p screen to keep costs lower, but also to help balance power efficiency.

The most apparent change might be a smaller notch on the screen. With the arrival of Oppo’s new “waterdrop” notch design, the OnePlus 6T notch is expected to shrink as well. Maybe next year when slider phones become more popular, the notch could disappear altogether.

Due to the new fingerprint system, the OnePlus 6T's design will be slightly tweaked compared to its predecessor. The 6T could be slightly thicker by up to 0.45mm, the internal hardware may also be rearranged. Now that the back of the phone is not expected to have a sensor, it may have a more unibody look, according to OnePlus.

A series of leaked 360 degree renders of the 6T lends credibility to these new design changes, from the “waterdrop” notch to the in display fingerprint scanner. The probable absence of the headphone jack is sure to irk a few customers, but OnePlus hopes to win them over with their new USB-C Bullet wireless earphones.

Price and Release Date

The OnePlus 6 retails for around INR 35000. OnePlus could keep the same price, but it is likely that the 6T will cost a bit higher. Either way, it’ll still be thousands less than a Galaxy S9 or the rumoured Pixel 3 or even the new iPhone X series.

With the leaks coming in fast, it's possible the 6T launch is imminent, possibly in the next few weeks. Last year, the OnePlus 5T launched in November, less than six months after the OnePlus 5.
